Term insurance provides life cover for a chosen period. If the insured person dies during that period and the claim meets the policy conditions, the insurer pays the applicable benefit. A standard pure term plan generally does not pay a maturity benefit if the policyholder survives the term.Plans can differ in how the cover changes, whether a survival benefit is included, and who is covered. Here are seven common structures and arrangements to understand before comparing policies.

Availability and terms vary by insurer and product.

1. Level term insurance

The sum assured generally stays the same throughout the policy term. This straightforward structure may suit people who want predictable cover for dependants, household costs or loans.Check: whether the cover amount and policy term match your family’s needs.

2. Increasing term insurance

The cover rises over time according to a predefined schedule or formula. It may help account for growing responsibilities, but increases and premium arrangements vary by plan.Check: the increase schedule, maximum cover and whether the premium also changes.

3. Decreasing term insurance

The cover reduces over time according to the policy schedule. It may suit a specific liability that is expected to fall, such as a loan. But a reducing benefit may leave less for other family expenses.Check: how quickly cover decreases and whether it is enough for needs beyond the loan.

4. Term insurance with return of premium

A return-of-premium plan provides life cover and may return specified premiums if you survive the policy term and meet the policy conditions. The amount returned may exclude items such as rider premiums, taxes or other charges, depending on the plan. It generally costs more than comparable pure term cover.Check: exactly which premiums are eligible for return. A refund is not the same as an investment return.

5. Convertible term insurance

Some policies include an option to convert term cover into another eligible life insurance product, subject to stated rules. This feature is not available in every plan, and the new policy may have different costs and benefits.Check: which products are eligible, when you can convert, whether approval is needed and how the premium may change.

6. Joint life term insurance

A joint-life plan covers two people under one policy where the insurer offers that structure. The benefit could depend on whether a claim follows the first or second death, and cover for the surviving person may continue or end according to the policy.Check: the payout structure, what happens after the first claim and how the plan compares with two individual policies.

7. Group term insurance

Group term insurance covers eligible members under an employer or another group arrangement. It can add to your protection, but the cover amount, duration and continuation rules are set by the group policy. Cover may be linked to your employment or membership.Check: whether the cover is enough for your family and what happens if you leave the organisation or group.

How to choose

Start with the financial protection your family may need: consider dependants, household costs, debts, future goals and any cover you already have. Then compare plans with similar cover amounts and policy terms. Before buying, review:
  1. The sum assured and policy term
  2. Premium amount and payment period
  3. How the cover changes over time
  4. Maturity or conversion conditions, if offered
  5. Claim requirements, exclusions and other policy terms
  6. What happens if you leave a group or if one person makes a claim under a joint plan
No one structure is right for everyone. Choose cover that addresses your family’s needs and fits your budget. Read the policy wording and schedule carefully before committing.
