The Policy Anniversary Rule
You bought a term plan three years ago when you were single. Now you are married, or perhaps you just had your first child. Suddenly, that basic life cover feels insufficient. You want an Accidental Disability or a Critical Illness rider. Can you just call your insurer and add it tomorrow? Not quite. In the Indian insurance market, you cannot add riders whenever you please. Most insurers follow the policy anniversary rule. This means you can only request to add a rider during your yearly renewal window. If your policy renews in October, you must wait until then to make the change.Fresh Medicals and the Age Factor
Adding a rider is not a simple paperwork update. It is a fresh risk for the company. If you want to add a Critical Illness rider at age 35, the insurer will likely ask for new medical checkups. Your health at 35 is different from what it was at 25. If you have developed high blood pressure or diabetes in the interim, the insurer might reject the rider request or charge a much higher premium. For a 25-year-old, adding a ₹25 lakh Accidental Death rider might cost less than ₹2,000 extra per year. By age 35, that same protection could cost significantly more because the statistical risk of health issues has climbed. The IRDAI Thirty Percent Cap
You might want every rider available in the brochure. However, the regulator has a strict limit. According to IRDAI rules, the total premium for all your riders combined cannot exceed 30% of your base policy premium. If your base term plan premium is ₹10,000, you cannot spend more than ₹3,000 on riders like Waiver of Premium or Accidental Disability. This is to ensure you do not end up paying more for 'add-ons' than for the actual life cover itself. Also, remember that your rider sum assured can never be higher than your base policy cover. If you have a ₹1 crore term plan, your Critical Illness rider cannot be for ₹1.5 crore.Standalone Policy vs. Rider
Sometimes, adding a rider is not the smartest move. Take Critical Illness protection for example. A rider attached to a term plan often has a very narrow list of covered diseases, perhaps only 10 or 15. A standalone Critical Illness policy might cover 30 to 60 conditions. Moreover, riders often terminate if the base policy ends. If you are looking for more comprehensive health protection, a standalone policy might serve you better than a mid-term rider addition. Since the GST on both term and health insurance was removed in late 2025, the cost of buying a fresh standalone plan has become much more affordable for young earners. How to Make the Change
If you decide to proceed, do not wait until the last day of renewal. Start the process 45 days before your policy anniversary. You will need to submit a 'Rider Addition Form' and a fresh 'Declaration of Good Health.' In some cases, you might need to visit a diagnostic center for blood tests or an ECG. If you find your current insurer is too rigid or doesn't offer the modern riders you need, you can consider porting your policy. Porting allows you to move to a new insurer who might have better rider options, like a 'Waiver of Premium' that triggers even on minor disabilities. OneAssure can help you compare these rider structures across different companies to see which one actually fits your current life stage.Frequently Asked Questions
