Need advice tailored to you?

Looking for the right plan? You don't have to guess. Let us compare the fine print for you and give you an unbiased recommendation.

Girl illustration
You are 24. You have a gym membership, your doctor appointments can happen online, you pay for almost everything through UPI and most of your life is probably sitting inside your phone.Health insurance? That can feel like something you will deal with later. After all, you are young. You are working. You are reasonably healthy. Why think about hospital bills already? That is the space ICICI Lombard’s new VIBE health insurance plan is trying to approach differently.VIBE combines regular health insurance with features around fitness, mental wellbeing, digital healthcare, rewards and optional lifestyle-related covers. But there is something important to understand before looking at all those features.A product page tells you what a plan offers. The policy wording tells you how those benefits actually work.So instead of asking whether VIBE is "good" or "bad", let’s do something more useful.Let’s decode what the plan actually covers, what happens when you use those benefits, and where the conditions start to matter.

So, what exactly is ICICI Lombard VIBE?

At its core, VIBE is still a health insurance policy. That means the foundation is familiar: hospitalisation, day-care treatment, pre- and post-hospitalisation expenses, eligible AYUSH treatment and other medical expenses covered according to the policy terms. The difference is what sits around that basic hospital cover.VIBE adds features such as:
  1. ReVibe Benefit
  2. Green Flag Bonus
  3. Aura Points
  4. GetFit fitness benefits
  5. Mind & Mood Recover
  6. Teleconsultation
  7. Optional maternity and newborn cover
  8. Thrill Shield for specified adventure sports
  9. Smart Returns
  10. Spouse Care
  11. Claim Protector
  12. Health Check-up
  13. Personal Accident cover
  14. Other optional covers depending on the plan
So this is not simply a hospitalisation policy with a few extra buttons added to it.But that does not mean every feature works automatically or without conditions. That is where the policy wording becomes important.

First, the part that actually matters: hospitalisation cover

Let’s start with the thing health insurance is ultimately supposed to help with.If you are hospitalised for an eligible treatment, VIBE covers expenses such as room rent, ICU charges, medical practitioner fees, medicines, drugs, diagnostics, surgery-related expenses and other admissible hospitalisation costs, subject to the terms of the plan. There is also coverage for eligible day-care procedures where a 24-hour hospital stay is not required.Pre-hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation expenses are also covered for the applicable period under the selected plan. This is important because a hospital bill does not begin when you enter the hospital. You may have consultations, scans, tests and medicines before admission. You may also need medicines, follow-up consultations and investigations after discharge. The policy accounts for these expenses within the applicable limits. The policy wording specifies different pre- and post-hospitalisation periods for different plan variants, so this is one area where checking your exact policy schedule matters.

What happens if your Sum Insured gets used up?

This is where VIBE’s ReVibe Benefit comes in.Imagine you have a ₹10 lakh Sum Insured. You have one hospitalisation that uses ₹7 lakh.Later in the same policy year, another eligible hospitalisation costs ₹6 lakh.Your original ₹10 lakh cover is no longer enough to handle the second claim.ReVibe is designed to replenish the Sum Insured when the available cover becomes insufficient because of previous claims during that policy year.Sounds like a reset. But does that mean unlimited insurance? Not exactly. The policy wording puts conditions around how ReVibe works. For Rookie and Value, the benefit can reset up to 100% of the Base Sum Insured once in a policy year. For the other applicable plans, the reset can be used multiple times, subject to the policy conditions. Each reset is capped at up to 100% of the Base Sum Insured. There are also restrictions around repeat admissions, related complications and readmissions following a previous claim. So the useful way to read ReVibe is not:"Unlimited insurance."It is:"Your Sum Insured can be replenished under specified conditions when your existing cover is insufficient."That difference matters.

Then there is the Green Flag Bonus

VIBE also has a benefit that can increase the available Sum Insured over time if you continue renewing the policy under the applicable conditions. This is called the Green Flag Bonus. For Rookie, BasicFit and Upgrade, the bonus can accrue at 20% of the Base Sum Insured per policy year, subject to a maximum of 100%.For Flex and GOAT, the applicable rate is 50% per policy year, subject to a maximum of 300%.And there is an important detail here. The accumulated Green Flag Bonus can only be used after the Base Sum Insured has been completely exhausted. So if you have a ₹15 lakh Base Sum Insured and have accumulated an additional bonus, you do not simply start using the bonus from rupee one of a claim. The Base Sum Insured comes first.Again, the benefit sounds simple until you look at the conditions. That is exactly why it is worth understanding how the bonus works instead of looking only at the percentage.

Okay, what are Aura Points?

This is probably one of the more unusual parts of VIBE.If you remain claim-free, you can earn Aura Points every month. The policy provides:
  1. Rookie, BasicFit and Upgrade: 500 points per claim-free month
  2. Flex and GOAT: 750 points per claim-free month
  3. Value: No Aura Points
These points can be used for eligible health and wellness services such as:
  1. Dental services
  2. Vision services
  3. Physical OPD services
  4. Diagnostics
  5. Pharmacy
  6. Sports clubs
  7. Specified sports and fitness activities
But there is a catch.Aura Points are not cash sitting in your account. They cannot simply be withdrawn or converted into money. They are redeemed through the permitted services and authorised network specified under the policy. And what happens if you make a claim? The points stop accumulating for the remaining period of that policy year. The points you have already accumulated remain available for redemption, subject to the applicable rules. So think of Aura Points less like cashback and more like a health and wellness rewards balance. That distinction is important.

Does VIBE actually include gym membership?

Yes, GetFit is one of the features built into VIBE.It gives eligible adult members access to gym membership and specified fitness activities through the network.Depending on availability, this can include activities such as:
  1. Aerobics
  2. Pilates
  3. Calisthenics
  4. Yoga
  5. Zumba
  6. Other approved fitness activities
But there is a waiting period and the benefit works through the designated network and applicable booking and verification process. So no, this does not mean you can walk into any gym in the country and hand them your VIBE policy number. The benefit is network-based.That is a small detail, but one you would probably want to know before counting the gym membership as part of your personal fitness budget.

What about mental health?

VIBE also includes Mind & Mood Recover. This provides psychological counselling sessions through the insurer’s empanelled network. The benefit is available from Day 1, with the number of sessions depending on the plan. The policy wording specifies ₹1,000 per session, with the applicable number of sessions varying by plan:
  1. Rookie: 3 sessions
  2. BasicFit: 5 sessions
  3. Upgrade: 6 sessions
  4. Flex: 8 sessions
  5. GOAT: 10 sessions
  6. Value: 3 sessions
There is also provision for video consultation where a network counsellor is not available locally. That makes this different from simply having mental health treatment buried somewhere in the hospitalisation section. Here, psychological counselling is specifically built into the policy as a benefit.

And yes, teleconsultation is included too

VIBE provides online doctor consultations as part of the plan. This is one of those benefits that may sound small until you actually need it.You have a fever. You need help understanding a prescription. You have a minor health concern and do not want to spend half your day travelling to a clinic.Being able to speak to a doctor online can be useful in those situations. But remember, teleconsultation is not the same thing as outpatient treatment coverage for every medical expense. Those are two different things.

What if you are into adventure sports?

This is where the Thrill Shield add-on comes in.The base policy does not simply cover every possible adventure activity.Instead, Thrill Shield is an optional cover designed to provide additional protection for accidental injuries arising from specified adventure sports, subject to the list and conditions in the policy. So if you are someone who spends weekends trying activities that involve considerably more than a treadmill and dumbbells, this is a section worth reading carefully. The key word is "specified".An activity being adventurous does not automatically mean it is covered.

What if you are thinking about marriage or starting a family later?

VIBE also allows certain life-stage benefits to be added to the policy.Maternity Benefit is available as an optional cover for eligible female members. The policy wording provides maternity coverage of:
  1. ₹50,000 for Rookie, BasicFit and Upgrade
  2. ₹1 lakh for Flex and GOAT
There is a 24-month waiting period under the maternity benefit. The policy also provides for Newborn Baby Cover when the maternity benefit has been opted for and accepted, subject to the applicable terms. There are also limits around the number of deliveries or terminations covered under the maternity benefit. So if maternity cover is something you are buying the policy for, this is not a benefit you should simply see as "included".It is an optional cover with its own waiting period, limits and conditions.

VIBE also has a few less obvious add-ons

The plan can be customised with additional covers. One of them is Claim Protector.Normally, certain items listed as non-payable expenses may not be covered even when the main hospitalisation claim is accepted.Claim Protector is designed to cover specified non-payable items when the underlying inpatient or day-care claim is admissible, subject to its terms and limits. There is also Health Check-up, which provides an annual health check-up for eligible adult members within the applicable limit. Then there is Smart Returns. If you maintain the optional cover and complete five eligible claim-free policy years, you can receive a renewal discount according to the terms of the add-on.Spouse Care is another option. If you add a spouse later under the applicable conditions, it can help carry forward certain accrued benefits such as eligible waiting-period continuity and bonus continuity. There are also options such as Personal Accident, Voluntary Deductible, Room Modifier, Network Advantage and Tenure Glow Up.The important thing is that these are not all automatically part of every VIBE policy. Some are optional covers. So the final policy you receive depends on what you actually select.

What are the VIBE plan options?

VIBE currently comes in five main plan tiers, with different Sum Insured options:
  1. Rookie: ₹7 lakh
  2. BasicFit: ₹10 lakh
  3. Upgrade: ₹15 lakh
  4. Flex: ₹25 lakh
  5. GOAT: ₹50 lakh or ₹1 crore
The plan you choose affects more than just the Sum Insured.Different benefits, limits, bonus structures and features can vary depending on the plan.So choosing a plan should not simply be:"How much cover do I want?"It should also be:"What features and limits apply to the plan I am actually buying?"

Now, the part that is easy to skip: waiting periods

Every health insurance policy has conditions around when certain illnesses and treatments become payable.VIBE is no different. The policy has:
  1. An initial waiting period of 30 days for illnesses, with accidental emergencies treated differently
  2. A waiting period for pre-existing diseases
  3. A waiting period for specified diseases and procedures
  4. A separate waiting period for maternity benefits where the optional cover is selected
The policy wording provides for a waiting period of up to 36 months for pre-existing diseases and up to 24 months for specified diseases and procedures, depending on the applicable terms. There are also specific exclusions and conditions in the policy wording. For example, treatment during an applicable waiting period is not automatically payable simply because you have an active policy. This is why:"I have health insurance"and"My treatment is covered"are not always the same sentence.

What does VIBE not cover?

This section deserves as much attention as the list of benefits. The policy excludes or restricts several categories of treatment and expenses, subject to the exact terms. These include situations such as:
  1. Treatment during applicable waiting periods
  2. Admissions only for diagnosis or evaluation without eligible treatment
  3. Rest cure, rehabilitation or long-term care in excluded circumstances
  4. Cosmetic or aesthetic treatment unless medically necessary
  5. Certain infertility and assisted reproduction treatments
  6. Experimental or unproven treatments
  7. Treatment outside India
  8. Treatment at excluded or delisted hospitals
  9. Injuries arising from specified excluded activities
  10. Certain injuries related to illegal acts
  11. Intentional self-injury and certain alcohol or substance-related situations
  12. Certain non-payable hospital expenses
There are also specific conditions around adventure sports, maternity, wellness benefits and other optional covers. In other words, the exclusions are not a footnote. They are part of understanding the product.

One more thing: your room category matters

Your eligible room category depends on the VIBE plan you choose.Under the policy wording, Rookie and Value have twin-sharing room eligibility, while the other applicable plans provide for a Single Private AC room. There is also a Room Modifier add-on that can change the eligible room category. Why does this matter?Because choosing a room above your eligible category can have consequences for the claim. The policy wording provides for pro-rata deductions on associated medical expenses in certain circumstances when a higher room category is selected. So if you are comparing plans, do not just look at the Sum Insured.Check the room eligibility too.

So, what is VIBE actually trying to do?

At first glance, VIBE can look very different from the health insurance plans people are used to seeing. There are reward points. There is gym access. There is mental health support. There are digital consultations. There are optional covers for adventure sports and maternity. But underneath all of that, it is still a health insurance policy. That means the same basic questions still matter:What is the Sum Insured? What are the waiting periods? What is the room eligibility? What is actually covered? What is excluded?Which benefits are automatic?Which ones are add-ons?What happens after a claim? What happens if the Sum Insured is exhausted? And what conditions apply when you actually try to use a benefit? Those questions matter more than how modern the product looks.

The easiest way to look at VIBE

Think of VIBE as two layers. The first layer is the health insurance itself.Hospitalisation, day-care treatment, pre- and post-hospitalisation expenses, AYUSH treatment, Sum Insured, waiting periods and claims. The second layer is everything built around it.Aura Points.GetFit.Mind & Mood Recover.Teleconsultation.ReVibe.Green Flag Bonus. And the optional covers. The second layer is what makes VIBE different in presentation. The first layer is what you need to understand before buying it.Because when you are sitting at home scrolling through a plan and seeing "gym membership", "reward points" and "mental health support", it is easy to focus on the interesting stuff. The smarter move is to pause and ask:"What exactly does my policy say?"That is where the real details are.
