The ₹2.5 Lakh Reality Check

Imagine this. You are 31. You and your partner have spent months talking to doctors. You finally decide to start an IVF cycle in a top clinic in Bengaluru or Delhi. The estimate comes to ₹2.5 lakh for just the first cycle. You feel calm because you have a ₹10 lakh health insurance policy. You call the hospital TPA. They look at your papers and say those three words that hurt: Claim not covered. This happens to thousands of Indian couples every year. Most people assume IVF is just another medical procedure. It is not. In the eyes of an insurer, it often sits in a grey area between a modern treatment and a maternity benefit. In 2026, the rules have shifted, but the fine print is still there.

The IRDAI Shift and Waiting Periods

The 2024 IRDAI Master Circular changed the game for waiting periods. Previously, you might have waited four years for a pre-existing condition to be covered. Now, that limit is capped at three years. This is huge. If you have PCOD or PCOS, it is likely listed as a pre-existing disease. If you disclose it today, you can potentially claim for infertility treatments after 36 months of continuous cover. Some plans even offer a 24-month waiting period specifically for maternity and assisted reproduction. But here is the catch. You must buy the policy long before you need it. Waiting until you are already at the clinic is too late. The clock starts from the day your policy is issued.

Why an OPD Rider is Your Best Friend

IVF is not just the day of the procedure. It is months of hormonal injections. It is weekly blood tests. It is multiple ultrasounds and expensive consultations. A standard health policy only pays if you are hospitalized for 24 hours. Most fertility tests do not require that. This is where an OPD (Outpatient Department) rider saves you. These riders cover doctor visits and pharmacy bills. While a procedure like egg retrieval might be covered under the main policy, the ₹50,000 you spend on pre-procedure tests usually comes out of your pocket unless you have this rider. With the removal of 18% GST on health insurance premiums in late 2025, adding an OPD rider is now much cheaper than it used to be. It is a small price for significant peace of mind.

Sub-limits: The Hidden Ceiling

You might have a ₹20 lakh cover, but your IVF benefit might be capped at ₹1 lakh. This is called a sub-limit. Popular plans like Star Women Care or Care Joy have specific caps on Assisted Reproduction Treatment (ART). For instance, some variants of Star Women Care may limit IVF payouts to ₹1 lakh or ₹2 lakh regardless of your total sum insured. If your clinic charges ₹3 lakh, you pay the remaining ₹1 lakh yourself. Another common limit is on the number of cycles. Many insurers only pay for one or two cycles in your entire lifetime. If the first attempt fails, you might be on your own for the second one. While comparing these plans on platforms like OneAssure, you should look specifically for these sub-limit clauses rather than just the total cover amount.

Modern Treatments vs. Maternity Benefits

Is IVF a modern treatment? IRDAI says yes. Does that mean every plan covers it? No. Many basic plans exclude infertility altogether. You need to check if your policy has a specific Assisted Reproduction Treatment rider. Standard modern treatments usually cover things like robotic surgeries or stem cell therapy. IVF often requires its own special mention in the policy document. Also, keep an eye on age limits. Most Indian plans cover infertility only for women aged between 21 and 45. If you are planning for a child later in life, your window for insurance support might be smaller than you think.

The Disclosure Trap: PCOS and Beyond

The biggest reason for claim rejection is non-disclosure. If you were diagnosed with PCOS at 22 and you apply for a policy at 28 without mentioning it, your IVF claim will likely be rejected. Insurers view PCOS as a precursor to infertility. Always be honest. It might increase your premium slightly or add a waiting period, but it ensures the claim actually gets paid when you need it. Document every consultation. Keep every prescription in a digital folder. When 2026 arrives and you are ready for that claim, a clean medical history is your strongest weapon.
