The 'Normal' Report Trap

You are 30. Your latest blood report says your fasting sugar is 95. Perfect, right? You think you do not need to mention that daily metformin tablet to the insurance company. This is a massive mistake. If you have been on medication for six months, you have a pre-existing condition. It does not matter if your current levels are normal. The medicine is keeping them normal. If you hide this, the insurer can reject your claim later for non-disclosure. They call it 'material fact concealment.' You call it a disaster. Be honest. Tell them about the pills. Tell them about the dosage. It is better to have a policy that knows you than a policy that fails you when you are in a hospital bed in Bengaluru or Mumbai paying ₹8,000 for a room.

The New 5-Year Shield

Here is some good news from the IRDAI. The moratorium period is now five years. Earlier, it was eight. This means if you pay your premiums continuously for five years, the insurer cannot reject your claim based on non-disclosure, except in cases of proven fraud. It is a safety net. But do not use this as an excuse to lie. If you get hospitalized in year three for a heart issue and they find out you had BP for a decade, they will reject it instantly. Recent changes also capped the maximum waiting period for pre-existing diseases at just three years. Some modern plans even offer day-one coverage for diabetes or hypertension. You just have to look for them. Use OneAssure to compare these specific 'Day 1' lifestyle covers before you sign the dotted line.

Loading Is Not a Penalty

When you disclose high BP, the insurer might increase your premium by 10% or 15%. This is called 'loading.' Do not panic. Do not walk away. Loading is a blessing in disguise. It is the insurer saying, 'We know your risk, we are charging for it, and we will cover you.' Paying an extra ₹2,000 a year is much better than losing a ₹5 lakh claim because you tried to save a few bucks. With GST recently removed on health insurance, your overall out-of-go pocket cost has already dropped. Use that saving to pay for the loading. It buys you peace of mind.

The Hospital File Ghost

Imagine you are admitted for a minor surgery. The doctor asks, 'Any history of illness?' You casually mention, 'I have had BP for five years.' The doctor writes 'History of HTN - 5 years' on your discharge summary. This note is a claim killer. If your insurance policy is only two years old and you never disclosed BP, the insurance surveyor will see that note. They will see '5 years.' They will see your policy age. They will reject your claim for 'suppression of facts.' Your doctor's notes are the ultimate evidence. Ensure your policy matches your medical history perfectly.

The Tele-Medical Call Checklist

Most insurers now do a tele-medical verification. A doctor calls you. They ask about your health. Do not rush this call. Do not take it while driving in traffic or in a noisy office. Keep your latest prescriptions and lab reports handy. If they ask if you take any regular meds, say yes even if it is just a 'mild' BP pill. If they suggest a physical check-up, go for it. A cleared medical check-up makes your policy almost bulletproof. It proves the insurer knew exactly what they were getting into.

Avoid the Agent Shortcut

Never let an agent fill your form. They might tick 'No' on all health questions to get the policy issued quickly and earn their commission. It is your life. It is your money. Always review the proposal form yourself. Check the 'Medical History' section twice. Ensure every small detail you mentioned is actually written there. If it is not on paper, it does not exist for the insurer. Update them even during renewals if you get a new diagnosis. Honesty is the only way to ensure your claim actually gets paid.
