The Big Shift in AYUSH Coverage

You might think Ayurveda is just for relaxing massages. It is not. For many Indians, it is the primary choice for chronic issues like back pain or sinus. Until recently, insurance companies treated these treatments like a secondary thought. They would often cap the coverage at a tiny amount or reject it entirely. That changed on April 1, 2024. The insurance regulator, IRDAI, issued a clear directive. Insurers must now treat AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) at par with Allopathy. This means you have more freedom to choose how you want to heal. But there are still rules you must follow to get your money back.

The Accreditation Trap

Do not walk into any local Ayurvedic center and expect a claim. It does not work that way. Your chosen hospital or clinic must have specific certifications. Look for NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) or QCI (Quality Council of India) accreditation. If the facility is not recognized by these bodies or is not a government hospital, your claim will likely be rejected. Imagine spending ₹50,000 on a Panchakarma treatment only to realize the center was just a fancy spa without the right paperwork. Always ask for their accreditation certificate before you start your treatment.

The 24-Hour Rule Still Applies

Hospitalization is mandatory. Most standard health insurance plans only cover AYUSH if you are admitted for at least 24 hours. If you go for a quick one-hour consultation or a short procedure and head home, the insurance company will not pay. This is a common pain point. You might feel that Ayurveda does not always require staying overnight, but the policy wording usually insists on it. If you need regular consultations for Homeopathy, a standard plan is not enough. You will need an OPD (Out-Patient Department) rider. These riders cover visits to the doctor and medicines without needing you to stay in a hospital bed.

Curative vs Wellness: Know the Difference

Insurance pays for cures, not relaxation. This is where most claims fail. If you are taking Ayurvedic treatment for a specific illness like Sciatica or Psoriasis, it is curative. The insurer will likely pay. However, if you go for a rejuvenation massage or a general detox because you feel tired, that is wellness. Wellness treatments are excluded from almost every standard health insurance policy. Your medical documents must clearly state the diagnosis. Your doctor's prescription must link the treatment directly to a medical condition. Without this link, the insurer will view it as a luxury expense.

Hidden Sub-limits in Your Policy

Read your policy document carefully. Even though IRDAI wants parity, many older policies have sub-limits. A sub-limit is a cap on how much the company will pay for a specific category. For example, your total cover might be ₹10 lakhs, but the AYUSH limit might be stuck at ₹50,000 or 10% of the sum insured. If your Ayurvedic treatment costs ₹1.5 lakhs, you will have to pay the remaining ₹1 lakh out of your own pocket. When you compare plans on platforms like OneAssure, check if the AYUSH coverage is equal to the full sum insured or if it is restricted by these small caps.

Documentation is Your Best Friend

The reimbursement process for AYUSH can be stricter than Allopathy. You need a solid paper trail. Collect every single prescription. Keep the discharge summary detailed. Ensure the hospital provides a clear breakup of costs for medicines, room rent, and procedure fees. If you are treating a pre-existing disease like Asthma through Homeopathy, remember that the standard waiting period still applies. If your policy has a 3-year waiting period for pre-existing conditions, you cannot claim for AYUSH treatments for that condition until those three years are over. Treat your paperwork with the same seriousness you treat your health.

Cashless vs Reimbursement

Cashless is always better. It saves you from the stress of arranging large sums of money. Many insurers are now expanding their network to include Ayurvedic hospitals. Search your insurer's app for 'network hospitals' specifically for AYUSH. If you choose a non-network hospital, you will have to pay first and then wait weeks for reimbursement. With the recent removal of GST on health insurance for many categories, the overall cost of maintaining these policies is becoming more affordable. Use that extra budget to pick a plan that offers a wide network of accredited AYUSH centers.
